Your Brain Was Made for Books

Paper, Pen, and the Forgotten Wisdom of al-Qalam

Dr Hussein Kobeissi recently sent us a short video essay about the neuroscience of reading on paper versus screens. "Watch this," the message said, "and then think about Sūrat al-ʿAlaq." Along with the video came a reflection — a connection he had drawn between what modern researchers are discovering in brain scans and what the Qur'an placed at the very beginning of revelation. That reflection sparked a conversation that eventually became this article.

We went looking for the academic papers the video cited. Then we went further — into peer-reviewed meta-analyses, fMRI studies, and EEG research on handwriting. And at each turn, the evidence pointed in the same direction: the physical book and the physical pen engage the human brain in ways that screens and keyboards do not. The medium is not neutral. It shapes how deeply we understand and how much we remember.

Then we opened the Qur'an and found that Allāh had said it first — fourteen centuries ago.

The Video That Started the Conversation

"Reading on Paper Rewires Your Brain" by The Upgrade with Makai Elías Calles is a concise, well-produced walkthrough of the latest research. It won't settle the paper-versus-digital debate on its own, but it opens a perspective that is difficult to ignore. The ten-minute watch is well worth your time before reading on.

What follows is our attempt to pull together the science, connect it to Islamic sources, and consider what it all means for us as readers, parents, students, and believers.

Part 1: The Study That Should Change How We Think About Reading

In 2021, a team of researchers at the Université de Montréal and the Montreal Heart Institute published a landmark systematic review and meta-analysis in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. Led by Guillaume Fontaine and Ivry Zagury-Orly, the study did something no previous review had done: it examined the effect of paper versus digital reading on comprehension specifically among health professional students — people whose reading is not casual. It is vocational. It directly feeds into clinical decisions that affect human lives.

The researchers followed the most rigorous methodology available: PRISMA reporting guidelines, Joanna Briggs Institute protocols, and the GRADE framework for assessing evidence quality. They searched six major databases, screened 2,208 references, and identified 10 controlled studies collectively enrolling 817 participants — medical students, dental students, optometry students, and psychology students in health-professional programmes.

The Headline Finding

Across all eight studies that could be pooled, the meta-analysis found a slight but non-significant advantage for paper-based reading (standardised mean difference: −0.08; 95% CI −0.28 to 0.12). At first glance, this seems like a draw. Paper is a little better, but the difference is not statistically significant. If the analysis had stopped there, the conclusion would have been unremarkable.

But it did not stop there.

The Finding That Matters Most

When the researchers separated studies by whether the text was relevant to the students' own discipline — in other words, when medical students read medical texts and dental students read dental texts, rather than passages about microeconomics or short fiction — the picture changed dramatically.

Key finding (Fontaine et al., 2021): When students read texts directly related to their professional discipline, paper-based reading yielded a statistically significant advantage over digital reading (SMD = −0.36; 95% CI −0.69 to −0.03; p = .04). When texts were unrelated to their discipline, there was no difference whatsoever (SMD = 0.08; 95% CI −0.17 to 0.24).

This is a critical distinction. It tells us that the paper advantage is not a blanket effect — it emerges precisely when the reading matters most. When a student of Islamic jurisprudence reads a passage of uṣūl al-fiqh, when a medical student reads a pharmacology chapter, when a parent reads a book about raising children in faith — the brain processes that material differently on paper than on a screen. And on paper, it processes it better.

The researchers grounded this in the concept of "disciplinary literacy" — the idea that reading is not a generic skill but is intertwined with the specialised knowledge and habits of mind of the reader's own field. When you read material relevant to your discipline, you bring prior knowledge, pattern recognition, and a particular mode of reasoning to the page. Paper, with its tactile presence and spatial stability, appears to support this deeper, discipline-specific processing in ways that a screen does not.

The Distraction Finding

The second subgroup analysis was equally striking. When the researchers separated studies by whether reading was supervised or unsupervised, paper-based reading showed a significant advantage in unsupervised settings (SMD = −0.57; 95% CI −1.06 to −0.08; p = .02). In supervised, controlled environments, there was no difference at all.

The distraction problem: The review cited research showing that over a quarter of students self-report off-task digital distractions during study, and an estimated 50% of students' laptop time is spent on tasks unrelated to their studies. In unsupervised settings — at home, on the couch, at the kitchen table — learners using digital devices are pulled toward social media, notifications, and web browsing. Paper eliminates these distractions entirely.

Think about where most of us do our Islamic reading. Not in a supervised classroom. At home, after the kids are in bed. On the couch after ʿishāʾ. In a study between Fajr and sunrise. These are precisely the unsupervised, uncontrolled environments where the paper advantage is largest. The book on your nightstand does not ping. It does not suggest another video. It sits in your hands, quiet and patient, and lets your brain do what it was designed to do: read deeply.

Part 2: The Supporting Evidence

The Fontaine et al. meta-analysis does not stand alone. A growing body of research — from children's reading to brain imaging to handwriting — reinforces its conclusions.

Children and Paper: Two Major Meta-Analyses

In 2021, Furenes, Kucirkova, and Bus published a meta-analysis in the Review of Educational Research examining 39 studies and 1,812 children aged one to eight. When digital books were simply digitised copies of paper books with no enhancements, children showed significantly lower story comprehension on the screen. The prediction interval for this paper advantage ranged entirely on the negative side (−0.38 to −0.06), meaning the effect is robust and replicable. The explanation: cognitive load theory. A screen diverts a portion of the child's limited processing capacity to handling the device itself, and the story suffers.

In 2025, Liang, Zhang, and Sun confirmed this in a second meta-analysis of 29 studies and 2,390 children, published in the International Journal of Early Childhood. Their most striking finding: children from low socio-economic backgrounds showed negative effects on story comprehension from digital reading compared to print. Interactive features — games, animations, tappable hotspots — increased cognitive load and distracted children from the narrative. And when adults read with children from a physical book, the comprehension gap between digital and print disappeared entirely. The adult plus the paper book is the gold standard.

The Brain Scan: University of Tokyo (2025)

Professor Kuniyoshi Sakai's team at the University of Tokyo published the first fMRI study directly comparing brain activity during paper and screen reading. Participants who read the first half of a story on paper showed reduced activation in frontal language-related brain regions when reading the second half in the scanner. Their brains were doing less work to achieve the same or better comprehension. Paper provides stable spatial and tactile cues — the feel of the page, the visual memory of where a passage sits — that allow the brain to organise narrative information more efficiently.

Handwriting vs. Typing: The Norwegian EEG Study (2023)

Professor Audrey van der Meer at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology spent over two decades studying brain connectivity during handwriting versus typing. Her 2023 EEG study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, showed that writing by hand activates far larger areas of the brain than typing. Handwriting engages the sensorimotor cortex, the visual cortex, and areas involved in memory consolidation. The neural patterns produced by handwriting closely resemble those seen during deep learning. Typing on a keyboard produced minimal connectivity.

The consistent message: Across meta-analyses, fMRI scans, and EEG studies, the evidence points in the same direction. The physical acts of reading a book and writing with a pen engage the brain in ways that screens and keyboards do not. The medium shapes how we think, how deeply we understand, and how much we retain.

Part 3: What the Qur'an Said First

And now the part that stopped our friend in his tracks — and stopped us too when he pointed it out.

The very first words revealed to the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣ) — the opening of divine communication to all of humanity — were not about prayer, fasting, or pilgrimage. They were about reading. And the pen.

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ۝ خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ۝ ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ ۝ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ ۝ عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
"Read in the Name of your Lord who created — created the human being from a clinging mass. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous — who taught by the pen — taught the human being what he did not know." (al-ʿAlaq, 96:1–5)

Consider the structure. Allāh introduces Himself as Creator, then immediately pivots to the instrument of knowledge: al-qalam, the pen. Not speech. Not thought. The pen — a physical, tactile instrument that leaves a visible, permanent mark on a physical surface.

The tafsīr An Enlightening Commentary into the Light of the Holy Qur'an (al-islam.org) observes that Allāh emphasises al-qalam alongside creation itself, placing the development of the soul through the pen on equal footing with the development of the body from a blood clot. It further notes: "On the day when these verses were revealed, not only in the territory of Ḥijāz, which was the territory of ignorance, few people valued the pen, but also in the civilised world of that time, the pen was worth little. Today, however, we know that the basis of whole civilisations, different kinds of knowledge, and the progress of Man in different fields pivots on the existence of the pen."

The Illuminating Lantern commentary by al-Kāẓimī (al-islam.org) draws an even more profound distinction. When the Qur'an discusses creation, Allāh describes Himself as "generous" (karīm), but when it turns to knowledge and teaching, He describes Himself as "the Most Generous" (al-akram) — "as if creation in its entirety is in one hand, while teaching the human being what he did not know is in the other above it." This places the act of learning, specifically learning through the pen, at the very summit of divine generosity.

The same commentary distinguishes between two types of knowledge embedded in these verses: acquired knowledge (ʿilm iktisābī) — "which is received from the physical sources of reading, writing, and the minds of men" — and inspired knowledge (ʿilm ilhāmī) — "bestowed only upon the elect of Allāh's servants." The pen is the instrument of the first; the heart is the vessel of the second. Both are honoured. But the pen comes first in the order of revelation.

The Word كتاب Itself

Throughout the Qur'an, when Allāh refers to the Qur'an itself, He most frequently uses the word kitāb — الكتاب. This word comes from the Arabic root ka-ta-ba (كتب), meaning "he wrote." The Qur'an calls itself a book — a written thing, an inscribed thing, a thing of pen and ink and permanence.

Sayyid Wahid Akhtar, in his essay The Islamic Concept of Knowledge published in al-Tawḥīd journal (al-islam.org), provides a remarkable statistic: the word al-ʿilm (knowledge) and its derivatives appear in 704 verses of the Qur'an. The word qalam (pen) occurs in 2 places. But al-kitāb (the book) appears in 230 verses — and other words associated with writing occur in a further 319 verses. The aids of knowledge — book, pen, ink — are mentioned nearly as frequently as knowledge itself.

And then there is the oath. In Sūrat al-Qalam (68:1), Allāh swears by the pen and by what is written:

نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
"Nūn. By the Pen, and by what they inscribe." (al-Qalam, 68:1)

Allāh does not swear by trivial things. That He swears by the pen and by the act of writing tells us something about the sacred weight of the physical act of inscription. Sheikh Mansour Leghaei, in Ultimate Questions in Philosophy of Religion (al-islam.org), puts it simply: "God takes an oath by 'pen' and 'all that is used for writing' (68:1). The Almighty God in almost every page of our scripture encourages people to learn, admires the learned people, and promises them elevated status in this world and the next."

Fiṭrah and Disciplinary Literacy

Here is where the science and the sacred text converge most directly. The Fontaine et al. study found that the paper advantage emerges when students read material relevant to their own discipline — when the text connects to prior knowledge, existing frameworks, and ingrained habits of thinking. Islamic theology has a name for this kind of alignment between the human being and truth: fiṭrah.

Allāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī writes that "Islam, which aims at the primordial nature of the human being, guides humanity to the unadulterated natural society" (al-islam.org). When our friend sent us that video, he added a note: "The neuroscience doesn't feel surprising — it feels familiar. It harmonises with our fiṭrah, with our intuition, and with what our forefathers had been doing for thousands of years." He was right. The great scholars of our tradition — from Imam ʿAlī (ʿa), who instructed his companions to "record knowledge by putting it into writing," to the scholars of Najaf and Qom who still fill handwritten notebooks during their dars — all arrived at the same conclusion that the neuroscientists are now measuring with standardised mean differences and confidence intervals.

The Prophet (ṣ) himself said: "The ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr" (al-islam.org). Note the word: ink. Not data. Not pixels. Ink — the physical trace left by a pen on a page.

Part 4: What This Means for Us

For Students of the Ḥawza and Islamic Sciences

The finding by Fontaine et al. on disciplinary literacy applies directly to Islamic studies. When a ṭālib al-ʿilm reads a passage of fiqh, tafsīr, or uṣūl on paper, they bring their accumulated knowledge, their seminary training, and their particular mode of reasoning to the page. The paper supports this. A screen, according to the evidence, does not support it in the same way — and the gap widens in unsupervised, self-directed study environments, which characterise virtually all independent ḥawza reading.

Combined with the Van der Meer handwriting study, the implication is clear: reading the text on paper and writing notes by hand — the method our scholars have used for centuries — is not a charming tradition. It is a neurologically optimal learning strategy.

For Parents

Both children's meta-analyses found that adult-mediated reading of physical books is the gold standard for story comprehension. When a parent sits with a child and reads from a paper book — pointing at illustrations, pausing to explain a word, asking "what do you think happens next?" — they are activating a mode of learning that no app can replicate. The Liang et al. (2025) study was particularly clear: when adults were present during reading, the comprehension gap between digital and print disappeared entirely. The adult is the decisive variable — and the physical book is the adult's best tool.

For the youngest children, the tactile experience of a board book — the weight, the texture, the act of turning a real page — is not a quaint relic. It is a neurological scaffold. It is how the brain learns to associate reading with focused, sustained attention rather than the fragmented, stimulus-seeking behaviour that screens encourage.

For All of Us Reading at Home

The distraction finding from Fontaine et al. deserves special attention. Most of us are not reading in supervised classrooms. We are reading at home, in the masjid library, on public transport — all unsupervised settings. The study showed that in these environments, the paper advantage is large and statistically significant. A physical book removes the possibility of notification pings, social media pulls, and algorithmic rabbit holes. It creates a closed environment for deep thought. It is, in the researchers' language, a low-distraction reading medium by design.

A commentary by Fjortoft and colleagues, cited in the Fontaine et al. review, cautioned against professional students' overreliance on digital reading and suggested a possible association with declining performance on national board examinations. Although many variables may contribute to such a trend, the warning is worth hearing: the medium through which we read may be quietly shaping the quality of what we know.

A Final Thought

There is a beautiful irony in the fact that the very first word revealed to the Prophet (ṣ) — iqraʾ, "Read!" — was spoken to a man who could not read or write. The message was clear from the beginning: knowledge is not something you are born with. It is something you reach for. It is something you hold in your hands. It is something you inscribe, with effort, onto the pages of your life.

The science is catching up to what our fiṭrah already knew. A book in your hand is not the same as a book on your screen. A pen in your fingers is not the same as a keyboard under your thumbs. The brain knows the difference. The Qur'an knew it first.

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
"The One who taught by the pen." (al-ʿAlaq, 96:4)

Go pick up a book. A real one. Feel its weight. Turn its pages. Write in its margins. And know that in doing so, you are participating in something the Creator Himself chose to honour.
